Chapter 8
It had become my mission as the days passed to get Isabelle to relax, to open up. She claimed she was just being professional, but I knew better. She was scared of fucking up this arrangement. And to be honest, so was I.
Every time I saw her, I fell for her a little more, and I knew I wanted more than a contract. Which was why I hadnât gotten her an engagement ring yet or told anyoneâincluding my familyâwhat Iâd done.
I wanted a real engagement and a real wife, not a fake one. Which meant I had to be extra careful. It was also why I didnât feel bad making up âthe rulesâ as I went. Even though it wasnât what the contract said, I told her she needed to move in to keep up appearances. I told her she needed to call me Nickâand do it frequently. We were supposed to be engaged, right? I also insisted on her working less and joining me for every single function I was supposed to attendâwhich was the only thing actually in the contract.
My first one, a charity gala, was tonight. Iâd insisted on buying Isabelle a new dress. Not only because I figured she might not have one but because I wanted to. I wanted to give her even more than that, but I was being patient. If I could keep this ruse up long enough, maybe her feelings would turn from professional to real as well and we could throw away the contract and start fresh.
I knocked on the door to her room early that evening, anticipation racing through me. I wanted to see my almost-bride. I wanted to touch her and pretend that tonight, we really were together.
When she opened the door, the air was knocked out of me. Every line, every curve, was perfection. She stunned in a red dress that fit her like a glove.
âIsabelle,â I breathed.
âToo professional for you?â she asked with a smirk.
I pulled her into my arms, skimming my hands over her bare shoulders and then running them down her back. I paused above her ass, willing my cock to stay where it was supposed to.
Fuck. I didnât know how I was going to make it through tonight. I needed her more than I needed air.
âYouâre divine,â I murmured into her ear. âThe perfect wife.â
She exhaled. I wasnât sure it was because she could feel my arousal or because she was still steeling herself for the idea of marriage to me.
âYou think I need a necklace or something?â she asked, gesturing to her neck.
My eyes dipped there, and then lower, taking in the swell of her breasts. I could imagine myself slowly peeling off the dress and putting my mouth to her puckered nipple. I could imagine her back arching to give me better access. I could imagine her growing wet between her legs and begging me to take her.
âDo you have something that will work?â I asked, distracted.
âNot really.â
âBack at home?â
She eased away with a smile.
